A slotted grub screw sits within a threaded hole, giving a headless fixing for electronics, enclosures and furniture. These plastic set screws are supplied in packs of 50. Material choices include clear acrylic/polycarbonate, white polypropylene and grey PVC, each with properties suited to different conditions.

Where are plastic grub screws useful?

They suit joints that need a headless, non-marring fixing. A screwdriver turns the slot at the end of the screw, so access is needed along the screw axis. The headless body fits within the threaded part of the assembly.

These plastics are lightweight, electrically insulating, non-magnetic and corrosion-free. Those properties are useful around electrical components and where the screw contacts a finished surface. The thread size and screw length determine the fit in the joint.

Which plastic set screw material should I choose?

Clear acrylic/polycarbonate suits a visible fixing, polypropylene suits moisture and chemical contact, and PVC provides water resistance and resistance to outdoor weathering.

  • Clear acrylic/polycarbonate is rigid, holds its shape and has high transparency for a discreet fixing.
  • White polypropylene does not absorb water and resists acids, alkalis, oils and solvents. It is inherently flexible and has moderate impact resistance.
  • Grey PVC resists abrasion and impact and holds its shape at ambient temperature. It has good chemical stability against acids, alkalis, oils and most inorganic chemicals.

What sizes of plastic grub screw are available?

Examples include M3 x 6 mm in clear acrylic/polycarbonate or white polypropylene, and M10 x 20 mm in white polypropylene or grey PVC. M5 x 10 mm and M8 x 16 mm screws are available in clear acrylic/polycarbonate, white polypropylene and grey PVC.

For M6 fittings, examples include a grey PVC screw 10 mm long and clear or white screws 12 mm long. Clear M8 x 25 mm is another length option. Match the screw length to the threaded depth and the position needed within the assembly.
