How to measure a part

Record the dimensions you can check, then compare them with the drawing or specification for the listed part.

Record the dimensions

  1. Identify the shape and fixing method.
  2. Write down the dimensions in millimetres, using a ruler or calliper appropriate to the part.
  3. Say exactly where each measurement starts and ends.

Compare the measurements with the product drawing. Do not assume every drawing defines length in the same way.

What to compare

Screw or bolt

Record the head shape, diameter, length and thread details from the specification.

Hinge or bracket

Record the overall dimensions, hole positions and fixing method.

Washer, spacer or box

Record the inside and outside dimensions, thickness and usable space where relevant.

If you are unsure

Send a clear photograph and any dimensions you have. Include a product link or stock code if possible. A photograph is useful context, but it does not confirm the material, thread or exact fit.
